Saintes, 22 November 2011
Dear Friends,
ACDN (Action des Citoyens pour le Désarmement Nucléaire) and myself present our sincere condolences to Madame Mitterrand’s family and friends and to her Fondation. I met Danielle Mitterrand on several occasions (at Saintes for the inauguration of the Médiathèque François Mitterrand, and for the Salon of Books on Human Rights and Solidarity; and in Paris for the launch in France of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence.
She shared our struggle for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the phasing-out of nuclear power. She had signed several of our appeals. We shared and we still share her last struggle, the campaign for water-sharing and access to drinking water. We made this issue one of the main themes for reflection at the Consultative Gathering for a Livable World, which took place in Saintes on 27-30, 2011. Water is also one of the section headings in the Charter for a Livable World, a new document which we were intending to ask her to sign - and I am convinced she would have agreed to do so.
Her departure is a loss for all lovers of humanity.
We wish to be association in some appropriate manner with the tributes that will be paid to her.
With sincere greetings.
for ACDN
