Hunger Strike for a Referendum on France’s Participation in the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
Monday 14 May 2012

Press Release from ACDN - Saintes, France, 14 May 2012

Jean-Marie Matagne, Ph.D, aged 68, the President of ACDN (Action des Citoyens pour le Désarmement Nucléaire), will begin a

Hunger strike of indeterminate length starting on May 15, 2012 at midday.

We join him in asking the President of France, the new government and all parliamentary candidates to make a commitment to ensure that France honours her "obligation to pursue in good faith and the bring to conclusion negotiations leading to nuclear disarmament in all its aspects, under strict and effective international control," in conformity with the Advisory Opinion given on 8 July 1996 by the International Court of Justice at the Hague.

The French people have never been consulted on the question of nuclear arms, weapons for crimes against humanity which are built in their name and with their taxes. Nuclear abolition is a current item on the international agenda, and the question now needs to be put to France’s citizens:

"Do you agree that France should participate with the other states concerned in the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, under mutual international monitoring that is strict and effective?"

50 years of a military and nuclear pact of silence, that is too long. Change is for now.

Jean-Marie Matagne will hold a Press Conference on Tuesday 15 May at 10am at the

Maison des Associations, 31 Rue du Cormier, SAINTES

He will then plant flowers at the foot of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki trees.

All those who consider themselves concerned are invited to join in this Symbolic Ceremony at the Prairie de la Palu, Saintes at 11am
