26 September - International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

Published 23 September 2026

A world without nuclear weapons is a priority aim of the UN. According to its General Assembly of 1961, any state using those weapons would be committing a crime against humanity; and since 1970 the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) requires the nuclear-armed states to negotiate their total elimination under "strict and effective international control". But these states (of which France is one) have never negotiated, and although the number of these weapons was reduced considerably after the Washington Treaty between the US and the USSR (in 1987), there are now over 12 000 of them and the number is again increasing, in France and elsewhere. The risk of their use is aggravated by the current wars, and by unpredicted and uncontrolled actions of AI. Is nuclear war inevitable? Can we, as citizens and parties, do anything about it?
